7 steps to more website traffic for your small business

When I speak with small business owners about how to get more out of their website, the problem always lies in one of two areas:
  1. The website's marketing message is weak
  2. The site isn't generating enough visitors

In this posting, it is my intention to discuss getting more website traffic because most small business owners that I speak with have no idea how to get visitors to your page.  I remember the first time I built a website for a small business.  I made the website and just expected a swarm of visitors to magically find my website.  When they didn't, I was very disappointed.

If you're feeling the same way, you'll want to read every word of this article because I'm about to share with you 7 tricks to get more traffic to your website.

  1. Research: The first step you should do is take some time and do a little research.  Search engines are going to be your biggest asset when it comes to visitors.  Take time to learn what keywords people are searching for your marketplace.  In other words, learn what people type into a search engine when they are looking for your business.  You can easily do this by going to Google's free keyword tool to find out what people are typing in when they want to find your business.
  2. Optimize your page: The next step is to actually USE THE KEYWORDS you found in the content of your website.  You should place those keywords in your headings, in your links, as the image tags for your pictures and you should use them several times in your articles.
  3. Submit Your Site: If the search engines don't know your site exists, they won't send any visitors to your website.  In order to get found you need to submit your site to the search engines query of site's to be indexed so that they will know you exist.
  4. Get back-links: Back-links are king.  Find website directories where you can post your website for free.  These links will help people find you and demonstrate to the search engines that your site is more credible.
  5. Ping Your Site: You can find free website's on the web that will ping your site.  A ping is a way of announcing to the internet that there is new content and it's like sending up a signal flair to the search engines to come and look at your site.
  6. Write Articles:  If you take some time and write quality articles about your industry, people can find those.  If you link those articles to your page, people can find your page and hopefully become your customers.
  7. Have patience:  The steps described here are part of a process called SEO (Search Engine Optimization).  This is the process for helping the search engines find your site and present it to others. This process can take time, but it will be well worth it if you do your research correctly in the beginning.
